Is Christianity An Excuse to Be Passive?

Even among some Christians in this modern society: taking the initiative, and taking responsibility for ones own decisions and actions is giving way to a very bad attitude. This pandemic outbreak of a self-centered, ungreatful, blame-others attitudes results in statements like these:

“Well, I am going to sue them because if McDonalds had not heated the coffee too much I would have never burned myself when I [foolishly] placed the cup of hot coffee in my lap.”

“Why should I go to jail, huh, it was not my fault, since I would have never run over those three school kids if they were not in my way. They should not have been in the crosswalk when I needed to run that red light to get to work on time.”

“If people want me to get off welfare then somebody needs to come to my apartment and give me a job.”

We have all probably heard statements like these and scratched our heads in disbelief. But what about this statement:

“If God wants me to get married, then somebody needs to write to me and ask me for a date.”

If everyone had that attitude, then no one would ever meet through the Christian dating services. TAKE THE INITIATIVE. ACTIVELY WRITE TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN. Searching the personals for Christian singles is easy once you get into the habit. Imagine if you made it your goal to write to one new person a week. That would result in a chance to meet 52 new people a year. That could put you 52 steps closer to finding the love of your life.

GOD IS THE GOD OF SECOND CHANCES!

Faith without action is dead. Now, we all know that you cannot work your way to heaven. Salvation is a free gift from God. It is one thing to pray and wait for the Lord's leading. It is quite another to be so totally passive that we don't ever take any action what so ever, even if it is the clear will of God for us to do so.

There are many discussions where our editors do not totally agree with each other on every point. But this we all agree on! God does not carry grudges. God forgives us even when we cannot forgive ourselves. AND GOD IS THE GOD OF SECOND CHANCES! Now maybe you have made some mistakes in your life. We all have. Maybe you have made some bad decisions in life. We all have. Or maybe you think, “Oh, I blew it, God will never give me a second chance.” Well, God is just waiting to build you up, give you wisdom, and give you as many second chances as it takes. In Matthew 18:21-22 Jesus instructed his disciples to forgive a person 70 times 7 times. So, God is not only the God of second chances He is the only true and living God, the great “I Am” who will forgive you and give you a second chance 70 times 7 times. Amen, praise God for his infinite love!

And now for the bad news. Sure God may forgive you, you may even forgive yourself. God may even bring about circumstances so that you get a second chance and give you the courage and wisdom to succeed. But we all have to live with the consequences of bad past decisions. It is always easy to blame others or to blame God. What is not easy is to be mature enough to take the blame for our own bad choices. Confess our sins. Let God heal our hearts and minds and try again. “A man’s own folly ruins his life, yet his heart rages against the Lord.” Proverbs 19:3 (NIV version)
