Advice for Christian Singles: are single parent Christians asking, "Babies anyone?"

CHRISTIAN SINGLES ARTICLES BY DR. JIM RIVES

The question of wanting children in a marriage is one that many Christian singles face, one way or another. It is an area that I encourage every single Christian to give a great deal of thought to before they go onto the Internet to write a Christian dating profile, much less begin dating other Christian singles or single parent christians.

The emails that usually come to me are from single Christian women, and single parent christians, who are older and either do not wish to have a child (or more children) or are not able to have children. They share with me how many single Christian men will either string them along and then toss them aside at their pleasure over this topic OR will drop them like a hot potato when they find that the woman will not be having a child. This is a very hurtful practice and one that brings unnecessary pain and rejection to a sister in Christ without kids or single parent christians who are women.

The purpose of a Christian dating profile is not to set a trap or to place bait for catching other Christian singles or finding single parent christians. Christian singles should place all significant items of their considerations into the profile – especially if having children is or is not important to Christian singles – men and women, and current single parent christians.

When Christian singles read a Christian dating profile or learn of child-bearing or child-rearing facts about other Christian singles, please proceed with caution and consideration. I am not saying that you should be forced to have children or not have children, just be loving and thoughtful of the other person’s feelings. If Christian singles either do not wish to have a child (or more children) or are not able to have children, making this point very clear in their Christian dating profile can prevent one difficulty that likely will not have arisen. Tactful honesty by single parent christians, and Christian singles without children, is always the best policy when it comes to writing (and responding to) a Christian dating profile.

The words found in John 13:35 come to mind – “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." I suggest that single parent christians, and Christian singles without children must be loving before Christian singles can find the love that they desire so much. May our great Lord bless single parent christians, and Christian singles without children, with wisdom.

In His love,
Pastor Jim
